PRACTICE MUSIC VIDEO #5 Final

...

...
Due to the problems with scheduling and so on we didn't have enough shots of the main actor that we wanted so I had to step in. This meant that the costume wasn't exactly what we had originally planed. The narrative wasn't what we had planned either so we created a new narrative the day before the shoot. We decided not to use any of the footage we had previously filmed as we though the change of actor would not look right.

For the first shoot I filmed most the shots but the second shoot Jon did most the filming as I was the main actor. Jon was also the one who edited the clip together.

PRACTICE MUSIC VIDEO #4 Change of plans

As we have had some delaying issues we have had to make some decisions to get the filming done as soon as possible. As the deadline is this Friday (30th Sep), we have planned to do the filming we need to to the 2 media lessons on Wednesday (28th Sep). This will mean we have 1 or 2 days to edit. To get this done we have had to change the main actor to me and change some of the scenes as the class room we had originally planed to use isn't available any more.

PRACTICE MUSCI VIDEO #2

We have decided for this practice shoot that Elvis will be the one in the original "jail" costume and every one else will be in student costumes.

The video will include Elvis running from a teacher to find himself on stage. He picks up a microphone and the track starts, as he is singing the teacher enters the room and a chase sequence happens. Elvis runs into a class room to hide, he sees a lesson is happening and everyone stops working and starts to dance. The teacher enters the room again and Elvis runs out the door. When the instrumentals are playing you see shots of students playing music. The chase continues and the video ends with Elvis having left school.

"Jailhouse Rock"

The warden threw a party in the county jail.
The prison band was there and they began to wail.
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing.
You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing.

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone,
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone.
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang,
The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang.

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Number forty-seven said to number three:
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company,
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me."

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

The sad sack was a sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone.
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square.
If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair."

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake,
No one's lookin', now's our chance to make a break."
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix,
I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks."

Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock...

This is what our costume looked like for Elvis. We tried to get the costume as close to the Jailhouse rock costume. The costume consists of shiny shoes, black jeans, a black jeans jacket. We had hoped to find a black and white striped T-shirt but we didn't find one in time so we ended up using a blank white T-shirt. We also tried to have the hair look like Elvis's.

PRACTICE MUSIC VIDEO #1 (Track)

We have been assigned to create a music video for a track of our choice. Jon and I have decided to create the music video on Elvis - Jailhouse rock. This practice music video is to get us ready for the final music video.

In this practice music video we hope to learn what needs to be done before, during, and after the music video. As the filming has to be done in just a week we have decided to film in school, the school will also be portrayed as the jail.

MUSIC VIDEO Eg5: David Duchovny-Hell or Highwater

Artist: David Duchovny
Album: (No album , First Song)
Song: Hell or Highwater
Released: 2015
Genre: Folk rock, Alternative rock

This is the first song from David Duchovny who is mostly famous for his acting in shows such as X-Files and Californication. As this is his first song he isn't signed on with a big record company, this means that the music video will have very little if any budget.

The music video is vary simple and doesn't have the same amount or level of special effects as some of the other music videos ive analysed. The video is black and white with the lyrics of the song appearing throughout the song. The lyrics that pop up are the opposite color of that which is initially in the video, so if the video is black then the lyrics will be white. This effects makes it easier to read throughout but does sometimes make a work hard to distinguish.

The music video has no narrative, the music video consists of shots put together of the band and signer recording the song as well as some shots of them walking around what looks to be the record company. Because of this the camera is all hand held.

The only time the video changes is when he sings the chorus. The video goes from him in the studio to what looks like old footage taken from a boat looking out at the sea. This footage is shown every time there is a chorus.

Not only is there a black and white filter but there is also a filter that makes the video look old and fading. This is to done to connect to the audience. The target audience are adults who grow up watching shows such as X-Files and there for the music video tries to connect with the audience through the "old tape" effect. Towards the end they show both clips of the sea and in the studio on-top of each other untill it fades out.

MUSIC VIDEO Eg4: Backstreet Boys- I want it that way

Artist: Backstreet Boys
Album: Millennium
Song: I want it that way
Released: 1999
Genre: Pop

Backstreet Boys is a Pop boy band who have been active since 1993. The music starts of with a fade in from white and pans down to the band, you can hear non-diegetic sound of a plane passing. As the camera pans down you can see the whole band walking in slow motion.

The narrative is very confusing as you dont know where it starts or where the middle is, the one think that makes sens is the end of the narrative as its at the end of the music video when they walk into the plane. The Location for the whole shoot is at an airport, either next to their plane or inside the airport.

As the music starts there are a lot of fade ins and outs to different locations and times. When someone starts to sing the camera mostly focuses on them but occasionally has the band in the background. This is very common among boy bands. When someone is singing the camera is often a close up of the singer. When the whole band is in shot the camera is often a long low angle shot.

There are a lot of morphs and transitions throughout the video. At one part the whole band can be seen but some of them disappear and then reappear again. While this is happening the back ground is in a time laps of people walking around the airport.

When the time laps sequence is happening they are all wearing white clothes. The corners of the shot are also fading which is common for this genre of music. Later on in the music video they have a choreographed dance which can also often be seen in this genre of music.

MUSIC VIDEO Eg3: Twenty One Pilots-Heathens

Artist: Twenty one Pilots
Album: Suicide Squad: The Album
Song: Heathens
Released: 2016
Genre: Rap Rock

This song was made for a movie and therefor the music video was made to fit with the movie. The music video contains clips from the movie as well as clips created for the music video. The main protagonist or antagonist in this case as he is an inmate is the lead singer of the band. He is sent to the same prison which the movie is based in.

The song starts of with the use of ambient sound and diegetic sounds that are most likely only in the video and not in the song. The video uses jumpy and fast editing to give the audience the impression that the main character is crazy. This is done throughout the video and is often done when the drum player is in a shot, making the audience not really knowing if  the drummer exists or of its a the singer just seeing things.

There is a cool editing technique used when the singer is looking in the cell at the drummer but then every think flashes except the singer and he is in the cell. This is used to give the impression that he is insane.

Twenty One Pilots makes music in the genre of alternative hip hop and indie pop rock. The TA for this is teenagers or young adults. This is why they got a deal to make the song Heathens for the movie Suicide Squad because the TA for the movie is the same as the band. The colors used start of really dark because it fits with the movie genre. The mise-en-scene in the video is very convincing to create the location of the prison. When you first see the drummer the colors change to follow a more light hearted theme.

As he walks on the stage his jumpsuit rip of to reveal a mustered yellow suit jacket, the band is also standing on a light platform to lighten up the mood as the music gets more intense.  The editing also increases in pace to fit with the increased pace of the song. As the band is playing both hand held shots are used from an inmates POV and cuts to a tracking shot.

As the music video ends the camera slowly movie away from the main singer sitting on the floor when the camera is close the color of his jump suit is mustered yellow but in changes unnoticeable to orange. The colors also revert back to the dark colors as the guards surround him and the sound of the alarm can be heard.

MUSIC VIDEO Eg2: Eminem-Without Me

Artist: Eminem
Album: The Eminem Show
Song: Without Me
Released: 2002
Genre: Rap

This is a very unique music video and is very well presented. The Music video follows a lot of rap music techniques if you will such as Rapper looking at the camera from a low angle or kneeling down at a high angle camera, fast editing and fast moving shots, etc.

This Music video follows a main narrative as well as a bunch of smaller TV Channel shots all featuring Eminem. The main narrative is set up as a comic book movie having Eminem as the main protagonist dressed as Robin (Batman's sidekick), but instead of and R on his chest its an E. They use pop up text to tell the narrative, and  the test is designed to look like a comic book. There are a lot more Batman comic book related shots such as the Batsignal in the sky or in this case an E, in the lyrics he says "nanananana" which refures back to the old 1966 batman as well as the scene when he is walking up the building in the same form as Adam West did in 1966.

The main narrative in this video is "Rap Boy" trying to stop a kid from listening to Eminems album without his parents knowing. Rap is a song genre that is mostly listened to buy young adults or teenagers, thats why this music video is designed to look like a comic because the main target audiences for comic books (especially in the time of this release) is whit males. To try and attract an older audience the video includes an Elvis impersonator and follows the style of batman 1966 instead of the newer Tim Burton batman.

The fast editing and change of location and characters is often used in rap and other videos aimed at teenagers as their attention span is small and needs something to make them keep watching. There is also a comedy aspect with the Elvis impersonator, and a talking cactus. The females are over sexualised to attract the young audience. Rap is mostly listened to by working class young adults, who are both black and white. There is also violence used for comedic purposes to attract the younger audience.

MUSIC VIDEO Eg1: Pixies-Bagboy

Artist: Pixies
Album: Indie Cindy
Song: Bagboy
Released: 2014
Genre: Alternative rock/ Indie

Unlike most music videos this video didn't feature the band or anyone singing. Most music videos either show the band or have someone (not necessarily the main singer) sing the lyrics. Instead we see a young boy messing around.

Pixies are and indie band meaning they are independent and dont work with a company. This usually means that there budget for their music videos are smaller than someone working with a company like WMG (Warner Music Group). This is why the music video uses a hand-held camera as it is cheaper and also creates realism. The camera often follows the main character using a tracking shot, this is so the central protagonist is clearly established.

The band Pixies have been active for many years and therefor their music is listened to by long term fans and not appeal to a young audience. But because they would like to attract new and younger audiences the music video contained a lot of colors such as the cereal in the bathtub, the smoke and the balloons. This is to attract a wider audience then just their target audience who will already know the Pixies. Their TA would be in their 40s as the Pixies have been active sins the 80s.

The central protagonist in this video is a young boy who isn't very attractive to what you normally see in music video now. This fits with the indie genre as its meant to follow more realism. At the start of the music video you see the young boy with the bands name Pixies, This is an artistic way of showing the bands name instead of just text on the screen. The boy might signify the band at a young age because the bands name is on his forehead, trying to tell a story of how the band where trouble makers at a young age. The Name of the song also appears, but as big bold 3D letters in a children's park. The song title also explodes to appeal to a young audience and follows the mischievous theme.

The song follows a narrative, all though we dont know what shots come in what order but it shows the start (him buying things in the shop) and the end (him leaving the house with a person tied up).

Welcome

My name is Kristian and this is my A2 media blog. This blog will show my progress through this year. Last year I created a blog which showed my progress of me creating a film opening, the blog can be seen here.

I have decided to work alone this year as it worked out well last year. My skills have improved over the years and I hope this year they will improve even more. This year the goal is to produce a music video and this blog will document my research and planning until my final draft is complete.
